MLSListings is driven by one mantra: to make you successful. We are committed to providing you with the most accurate, timely, and actionable real estate information and services. Though MLSListings is owned by the Associations, it operates very much as a traditional business – with a CEO, paid staff, and a board of directors. I’m often asked about the role of the Board at MLSListings, so I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce your 2016 Board of Directors and share a bit about our focus for the year ahead.

Volunteering to Serve

The Board of Directors provides oversight for MLSListings’ operations, with an eye toward monitoring the effectiveness of management policies and decisions. We don’t become involved in the day-to-day operations of the company, such as hiring. Instead, the Board is primarily focused on creating the strategy for MLSListings and guiding it to achieve its short- and long-term goals. The MLSListings Board of Directors is made up of 17 officers and directors:

  • 12 directors are selected by a Nominating Committee comprised of real estate brokers
  • Four directors are selected by the Associations of REALTORS who have their own nominating committee and interview/selection process
  • One director is “at large” and is selected by the Board itself

The Board reflects the diversity of the real estate professionals in the five counties MLSListings serves. Board members must be part of the MLSListings’ subscriber community. This is critical to their ability to represent what MLSListings subscribers are hearing, seeing, and feeling. This is how directors are able to bring issues to the table for the full Board to address.

Most recently, the Board approved a new Days on Market (DOM) policy that went into effect February 1, where listings in Withdrawn, Pending, or Contingent status will freeze DOM while in that status.


Tackling 2016

This year, the Board will be focused on regional changes and national programs like Upstream and AMP that will have significant implications for MLSListings and other MLSs. These national databases will drastically change the way we do business so we will be looking at how data consolidation can be implemented in the Northern California region. By moving to one database that has a single access point for all brokerages across the region, we can expand our capabilities to better serve our clients.


Conduit to the Community

Board directors have a number of responsibilities that range from attending meetings, to staying informed about trends in the business, and having the ability to engage on the strategies and financials of the organization. We must have a finger on the pulse of both industry changes and the needs of our member constituents because they are in a position to influence strategies and policies. In effect, we are the conduits for all of you to share your thoughts, issues, and needs – we serve as the voice for the entire MLSListings community.

So what do we get out of serving on the Board?

We have access to a depth and breadth of industry information at the local, state, and national level that is not accessible to non-Board members. With a deeper picture of what is happening in the industry, we are better able to interpret data, counsel our clients, and become better real estate professionals overall. We’re also able to bring these insights back to our offices and help extend that professional development to our agents.


Future Opportunities

Each year, around August, we ask for volunteers to serve on the Board. If you are a broker, I hope you will consider becoming involved with MLSListings at the Board level, or at least sharing your ideas and concerns with one of our directors.This organization has considerable influence in the industry – both at the regional and national level – and we are committed to continuing to lead in all efforts to shape our industry for the betterment of its professionals.
